These organizations and agencies provide services and/or information on a range of legal topics, including consumer and employment law.
Legal Services of the Hudson Valley • Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (formerly Westchester/Putnam Legal Services) provides legal services to low-income people throughout the Hudson Valley in a wide range of non-criminal matters, including Education and Special Education Law, Social Security and SSI Disability Claims, Housing, Public Benefits, Elder Law, and Domestic Violence. LSHV also has special programs that provide diverse legal services to individuals with disabilities, and individuals with cancer and HIV/AIDS.
Legal Aid Society of New York • Legal Aid Society of New York offers provides assistance to low-income people in civil and criminal matters throughout the five boroughs of New York. LASNY assists people with non-criminal problems in the following areas: Housing Practice, Government Benefits, Disability Advocacy, Family/Domestic Violence, Services for Senior Citizens, Health Law, Employment Law, Immigration Law, Homeless Rights, HIV/AIDS Law, Low-Income Taxpayer's Clinic.
South Brooklyn Legal Services • South Brooklyn Legal Services provides legal assistance to low-income people in Brooklyn New York, including in the areas of employment and consumer law. SBLS also provides assistance in the following legal areas: Tax, Special Education; Housing; Family Law/Domestic Violence; Benefits/Disability; HIV/AIDS Law.
New York State Attorney General • The New York Attorney General's website provides a wide variety of resources for New Yorkers regarding many areas of law, including consumer law and employment law. The AG's summary overview of unlawful termination can be found here.) The website also provides information on how to file a complaint with the Attorney General. The New York Attorney General also staffs a consumer helpline: 1-800-771-7755.

National Association of Consumer Advocates • The National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) is a nationwide membership organization for consumer protection attorneys. The NACA site contains a directory of consumer rights attorneys , opportunities for consumers to participate in national and state-wide consumer rights campaigns, as well as online “Know Your Consumer Rights” resources.
National Consumer Law Center • National Consumer Law Center is a non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of consumers and provides information and resources to consumers and consumer attorneys. Its website includes an extensive section for non-lawyers that covers many consumer topics, including: debt collection harassment, credit reporting issues, “credit repair” companies, identity theft, bankruptcy, your rights as a credit card holder, “tax refund” and “tax anticipation” loans, “rent to own” loans, payday loans, preventing foreclosure, and how the elderly can protect themselves from being taken advantage of financially.
Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project • The Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project engages in a variety of advocacy and organizing efforts on behalf of New York City's low-income residents. NEDAP's Consumer Law Project provides one on one legal consultations to low income consumers, focusing on helping low income women defend debt collection law suits. (This program can be accessed by contacting the NYC Financial Justice Hotline at 212-925-4929.) NEDAP's website contains extensive resources for consumers, including online publications and/or sample letters on the following topics: Credit Reports & Credit Score, Debt Collection, Identity Theft, Predatory Lending, Foreclosures. The NEDAP site also contains resources aimed specifically at assisting the elderly and immigrants.
New York City Department of Consumer Affairs • The NYCDCA's website provides resources for business and consumers, as well as information on how to file a consumer complaint with the Department.
Federal Trade Commission • The U.S. Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection is tasked with preventing fraud, deception and unfair business practices in the marketplace. The FTC's website provides consumer information on a variety of consumer issues, including consumer protection information on Automobiles, Internet, Credit & Loans, Identity Theft and Telemarketing. The FTC's website also allows consumers to file online complaints about unfair/deceptive practices.
Employment Law Resources
United States Department of Labor • The US Department of Labor's website contains extensive resources regarding employment discrimination, federal minimum wage and overtime laws, worker safety laws, the Family Medical Leave Act, and other topics.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission • The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is the federal agency tasked with enforcing many federal employment discrimination statutes, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The EEOC's website contains a extensive resources on employment law issues, including guides to understanding the various statutes, statistics, the text of various relevant laws and regulations, and information on how to file a charge with the EEOC.
New York State Department of Labor • This site contains information about many of New York State's employment laws, including wage and hour laws and information about unemployment benefits.
National Employment Law Association • The National Employment Lawyers Association is a membership organization made up of employment attorneys who focus on representing employees. Resources include a directory of NELA members, searchable by geographic area.
Workers' Rights Center of New York • Worker's Rights Center of New York offers free legal services to low-wage workers, focusing on collective actions on behalf of New York's immigrant workers.
National Employment Law Project • National Employment Law Project is a pro-employee advocacy organization that provides resources to employment lawyers and workers, lobbies on behalf of worker's rights and litigates on behalf of employees. NELP's “Materials For Workers” contains extensive information on workers' rights.
Tate & Renner, Attorneys at Law • Tate & Renner's website provides detailed information on whistleblowing issues, including a summary of relevant federal laws, as well as a chart of relevant state laws. The site also contains info about other employment issues, as well as consumer/debtor rights.
